Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Think of it as a "getting to know you" session. We'll talk about what's been going on, what's working, what's not, and what you'd like to see change. My goal is to help everyone feel comfortable and heard.
How often will you communicate with me as a parent?
Parents are important members of the team. I'll keep you informed about progress, offer guidance when helpful, and collaborate with you while also respecting your child's privacy.
How will I know if therapy is working?
You'll often notice small changes first—fewer meltdowns, better communication, improved coping skills, or more confidence. We'll check in regularly about progress and celebrate wins along the way.
What if my child or teen won't open up to you?
That's completely okay—and actually pretty common. Building trust takes time. I focus on creating a safe, relaxed space where kids and teens can open up at their own pace.
How do you handle confidentiality with teens?
Teens need some privacy to feel comfortable in therapy. I'll keep you informed about important themes and progress while protecting their trust. Safety concerns are always shared with parents.
Do you give homework or practice between sessions?
Sometimes! I may suggest simple skills, activities, or strategies to try between sessions. Nothing overwhelming—just opportunities to practice what we're learning.
How long does therapy typically take?
Every person is different. Some goals can be reached in a few months, while others take longer. We'll regularly review progress and adjust as needed.
How do you decide together when therapy is done?
We'll know it's time when goals have been met, skills are being used consistently, and everyone feels confident moving forward. Therapy doesn't have to last forever—it's about helping you thrive independently.
